Frames are transmitted over the Ethernet medium with an interframe gap of 96-bit times (9.6 µs for 10 Mbps, 0.96 µs for 100 Mbps, and 96 ns for 1 Gbps), as specified by the IEEE Std 802.3-2008. This value is a minimum and can be increased with a resulting decrease in throughput. The process for frame transmission is different for half-duplex and full-duplex systems.
