The following figure illustrates the relationship between the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model and the Ethernet MAC, as defined in IEEE 802.3-2008 specification. The grayed-in layers show the functionality that the Ethernet MAC handles. The following figure also shows where the supported physical interfaces fit into the architecture.
