eMMC programming has the following limitations.

  • DDR Memory controller needs to be present in the design for eMMC programming through the Vivado IDE. This is because the mini U-Boot for eMMC programming cannot fit into the OCM.
  • For eMMC programming on Versal devices, the Vivado IDE should not be used as the principal tool as the flash partitioning is not done extensively or as per your requirements. The Vivado IDE does not offer the flexibility or abstraction needed to fully prepare the eMMC for use in complex embedded applications. It should only be used as a primary test for the eMMC programming/booting.
  • Third-party tools that allow custom disk-based partitioning or embedded operating systems should be used for partitioning and programming the eMMC.
