When the Dataflow Design is selected, the active netlist is the dataflow netlist and consequently:

  • The Netlist window shows the dataflow netlist
  • Any open schematic windows display the elements of the dataflow netlist
  • The Hierarchy window sizing is based off the number of primitives within the dataflow netlist
  • Any and other items such as Edit > Find also work on the dataflow netlist
Note: The blue banner at the top of the Vivado IDE indicates the selected design. When the Dataflow Design is selected, the blue banner includes the DATAFLOW DESIGN as shown in the following figure.

When a cell is selected in one window it is selected in all the windows. This cross probing allows you to select the object where appropriate and then switch windows to allow further investigation.

The Hierarchy Browser shows resource utilization from the original netlist such as Registers, LUTs and Hard IP. In the Dataflow Viewer, as registers and LUTs are removed, sometimes hierarchies can look small but can in fact have large resource requirements. Selecting a hierarchical cell in another window shows the resource usage in the Dataflow Hierarchy Browser as shown. This is useful to quickly see the actual utilization within a hierarchical cell and lowers the requirement to switch designs:
