Each Vivado Design Suite release introduces new IP versions. Upgrade the IP in your designs at each release to benefit from updates and improvements. You can also use the older version as a static IP that is already configured and synthesized to avoid introducing unnecessary changes.
To use a static IP, generate all output products in advance because changes to those files are not possible. For more information, refer to the Vivado Design Suite User Guide: Designing with IP (UG896).
Use the report_ip_status Tcl command to check
the current status of the IP in your design. If the changes are required, selectively
upgrade the IP to the latest version. Each IP includes a change log detailing
modifications and any required design updates. Refer to the
Vivado
Design Suite Tcl Command Reference Guide (UG835) for details.
Occasionally, newer IP versions change top‑level ports, requiring design modifications. When the IP version changes in a new Vivado release, the version in your design becomes locked. Use it as static IP with available output products or update it to support the current release. Locked IP appear with a lock symbol in the Sources window of Vivado IDE.
