VFS runs compiled C/C++ through MATLAB MEX functions. A bug in your kernel (segfault, buffer overflow) crashes the process that hosts the MEX. VFS lets you pick where that host lives:

Mode Default Speed Crash Behavior
release yes Faster A crash takes MATLAB down with it.
debug no Slower A crash only takes down mexhost. MATLAB survives. 
vfsSettings.getInstance(mode="debug")   % enable before creating components
vfsSettings.getInstance().mode          % inspect current mode

To change mode after components exist, run clear all first.
