You should use a target-specific MACHINE and run a single-step Yocto
build that includes firmware through multiconfig dependencies. Your selected
MACHINE must define the firmware multiconfig targets.
EDF supports prebuilt common images for demos, but treats them as a special case. You should not use prebuilt common images as your primary workflow.
This approach builds the firmware and Linux image together. It keeps both components in sync. It also scales cleanly for production deployments.
