The PTP timer is essentially a free running timer with several fine-tuning capabilities. The timer acts as a local copy of the external master Time-of-Day (TOD) timer and can be updated and adjusted at any time. Various hooks and adjustment mechanisms are provided to keep the timer in sync with the master TOD timer.
