The Spartan UltraScale+ is an FPGA device; this reference design targets the SCU35 evaluation board. It implements an AMD MicroBlaze™ V soft processor in the programmable logic (PL). The device leverages a MicroBlaze V processor to monitor and interact with the inter IC (I2C) and general purpose I/O (GPIO) peripheral built into the SCU35 evaluation board. The implementation of a soft processor in the PL enables the deployment of a standalone software application to update and poll the state of the peripherals. Through a universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART) connection, the processor communicates with a web-based application running on a host machine. The following figure shows a high-level view of the targeted reference design.
